The Ghorapani trek is an absolute must for any fan of nature and/or hiking. Referred to as "the ladies trek" by serious mountain climbers, you will soon be eating those words about the fifth hour of the first day.

The trek to the first teahouse is steep and arduous, but when you reach the top and look down at your accomplishment there is a feeling of self fulfillment. Ulleri is our intro to the lifestyle and culture of the mountain people.

Beautiful, friendly, welcoming, this is the perfect prescription for a long day of climbing. The shale trail goes all the way to Tibet, so often you are moving out of the way for shephards and their flocks going to market or festival.

Donkeys wearing headdress pass you carrying bags of rice or flour and other goods as to mountain villages. Every minute of every day is memorable, stunning, hard to digest so much beauty...terraced farms, many different tribes, smiling children, all greeting you with "Namaste".

The mountain villagers consider themselves lucky and blessed to live in view of the Himalayas. It seems every home is a rest stop and sincere, welcoming smiles embrace you. Thatched roofs, mud walls, bamboo fences; these people live and farm as they did hundreds of years ago. Fascinating to us westerners and our pushbutton world.

Five hours from Pokhara lies Chitwan, the national park and refuge for the remaining Single-Horn Rhino. Elephant taxis abound. The keepers of the forest have hand-raised Beauty, a three-year-old rhino whose mother was killed by poachers.

The river is a continual movie of crocodiles, canoes, birds, bathing elephants and people.

Is it safe? Yes, Nepal is safe for tourism. There exists a long-running conflict between the Maoists and the government. The army is everywhere. Both sides rely on tourism, the main income for Nepal. If you speak to the villagers they will all tell you the same thing: you are safe, and the Maoists have never involved the tourists in their fight. The Maoists have a reputation for being polite and civil if you meet.

Since we began on Nepal treks in 2000, we have (with the financial help of several friends) made a huge difference in many nepalese children's lives. The Annapuna School in Pokola & The Little Sunflower School in Gandruk now have teachers, books, supplies & medicine for the mountain clinic that serves several small villages, & the funds to train a nurse to run it.

Nick,

In the rush to our various rides I didn't get a chance to say a proper goodbye and tell you how meaningful the entire Nepal experience was for me. The landscapes were beautiful and te people we met were wonderful. Those things I might have expected. But there were so many unexpected lessons for me: reminder of the disparities of wealth and advantage in this world; gratitude for allI have and further commitment to reduce my carbon footprint on the earth; reminder of the courage needed to persist in things in which one doesn't excel. So it was definately not just a leisure trip. I think it was a life-changing and life-enhancing experience.

I hope you will keep me apprised of continuing progress and needs regarding the schools and efforts you support in Nepal. I would like to continue to be involved as I am able.

Thanks.

Cheryl
